Going Grey

Janice Melville is a courageous woman. After 30 years of colouring her hair, she woke up one morning and decided Today is the day! She was going grey!

“My hairdresser didn’t want to do it. She said it would be better to do it gradually.”

“I had been mulling it over for six months and I was sick of dyeing my hair. I decided to do it all in one go. It took a lot of courage.”  Read more about going grey.

Janice had her hair coloured silver with a radical short cut. Her natural colour has now grown out to a beautiful soft look.

“I got a shock myself. When I looked in the mirror I thought: Who is that person?”

“I feel fabulous. I was sick of hiding behind blonde hair trying to look younger. I looked washed out and tired. The new hair colour suits the colour of my skin and has put life into my face.”

“When my husband saw it, his mouth dropped wide open and he said, Wow!!”

Janice has received a lot of compliments. “Girls at the gym have said they love the haircut. They didn’t notice the colour.”

For Janice, she had always associated grey hair with old. “It’s all in the mindset.” With a recent visit to Image By Design to update her wardrobe and with her stunning new haircut, Janice has discovered a new person – herself!

Going grey and loving it

Robin is one of those vivacious women who grabs everything life has to offer. She had been dyeing her hair for 15 years in various combinations of streaks, foils, tints and colour exploration.

For Robin, the question was, “When you dye your hair, how do you transition to grey?”

About to embark on a five month overseas holiday last year, she decided to go grey while she was away. With her hairdresser’s assistance, she had two shorter haircuts before leaving and a lighter colour streaked back into the hair so it matched the grey. “That way there was no high tide mark,” she explained.

Then she was off to enjoy her “senior gap year” as she calls it. By the time she returned she was ready for an adventurous new look. Her steel grey hair is now cut in a shorter sharper style. She loves it and her husband thinks it makes her look younger.

By not colouring her hair, Robin estimates she is saving $100 every six to eight weeks. With a myriad of interests including swing dancing, rowing, working part time and plans to study next year, Robin is enjoying “total freedom” and is thrilled with her grey hair.

A note from Karen who wrote this story

The photos of Janice reveal a woman who is literally bubbling over with excitement about her new look.

When I asked her why she had made the change, Janice said, “You were my inspiration.”

I was stunned!

Four months earlier, Viv had asked me to model at one of her Saturday afternoon workshops. Janice was in the audience and loved my grey hair. “You glowed,” she said.

With my grey hair, and relaxed new lifestyle in the Blue Mountains, I felt a deep contentment in my life, and I think it showed. I was also having a lot of fun modelling some gorgeous clothes alongside the other stylists. That’s what Janice had seen that day, and she was courageous enough to go get some for herself!
